State of the Game Monday - Updates & Future of this Sticky

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 11:36 AM PST

    Greetings, /r/wow

We've not run a State of the Game post for the last two months due to Blizzcon, and then the December Giveaways. We're sorry that it's been this long, as we know that a lot of people really like these threads. Now that 8.3 is on the horizon, we've been rethinking how this sticky should proceed.

Since December 2018, State of the Game posts have been a weekly staple. The posts initially started as a response to the communities desire to have a place to house all the reposted complaint threads that we had begun removing. Over time, they've seen consistent use but relatively repetitive content. That's to be expected as that was the point.

For the past few weeks, the Mod Team has been discussing ways to update our weekly stickies, as the information in them is very sparse or years out of date. At present, this sticky has no structure, and in some ways has lost its purpose. Nowadays it's mostly used as a catch-all "talk about the game" post. To my knowledge, none of the mods have removed and redirected a person here in a very long time. This sticky was good and useful for the time and events that preceded its creation. We're long past that and the subreddit is back to how it's always been. Which calls into question the usefulness of having this thread at all.

Rather than get rid of the sticky entirely, we're changing how it'll be run so that it may be more useful.

As 8.3 is scheduled to release on January 14th for North America/Oceanic, we're going to run a "State of 8.2.5 - Wrap-up" thread on Monday January 13th. Going into the future, the day before a major patch release we will run a "State of patch number - Wrap-up" thread. These will be used to discuss the game and what the last major patch changed, did for the better (or worse). It's a place for people to discuss the overview of the patch now that it's reached its conclusion.

On the following Monday, January 20th, a "State of 8.3 - Week 1" will be posted. These posts will run for five weeks before ceasing until the wrap-up thread. Most major changes happen in the first month and after that, besides some hotfixes and tweaks the game will more or less be the same. This should reduce repetitive discussion week-on-week and make the posts more useful.

As usual, discussion threads that overlap with this topic will not be redirected to this sticky. It will exist as its own thing.

We've toyed with the idea of adding some structure to the comments by adding top level comments that people can reply to to get started. Such as:

    • Class Design Good & Bad
    • M+ Good & Bad
    • Current Raid Tier Good & Bad
    • World Quests Good & Bad

But we're not sure yet if we want to add that sort of structure to the post.

Feel free to discuss the changes below. Have suggestions? We'd love to hear them!

Prediction of Shadowlands Launch, Beta, and Prepatch dates.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 12:33 PM PST

Hello! I've done this before and I'm back to do it again!

Basically I'm going to present the data for patch durations, beta durations, and total length for all expansions and use the averages from those. Compare it to current standards. With a bit of guesstimation and assumption involved. I will try to predict semi-accurate dates for Shadowlands related launches.

    ---------------------------------

    **Last Patch Duration**

WoW's last patch of the expansion (I am only counting the major raid patches as the final patch and B side patch will be ignored) has always followed a scary trend of lasting a year or more since WotLK. There were two exceptions to this. Cataclysm's last patch. Which was only 243days before it finally got the prepatch for MoP. Then the next one to last less than a year was Legion.

    --------------

TBC Final Patch - WotLK PrePatch = 204 Days (31 days of prepatch before launch)

WotLK Final Patch - Cata PrePatch = 309 Days (57 days of prepatch before launch)

Cata Final Patch - MoP PrePatch = 243 Days (60 days of prepatch before launch)

MoP Final Patch - WoD PrePatch = 400 Days (31 days of prepatch before launch)

WoD Final Patch - Legion PrePatch = 393 Days (43 days of prepatch before launch)

Legion Final Patch - BFA PrePatch = 323 Days (29 days of prepatch before launch)

    ---------------------------

Using the data above to predict the prepatch length means we have an average of 41 days in the prepatch before the next expansion launches. With a 1month minimum, 2month maximum. Historically.

We can also use the data above to predict how long we will be in 8.3. With the average duration of being in a last patch of the expansion before the prepatch is 312 days. Meaning a November release would line up with historical patch duration for a final patch.

THOUGH! I don't think that will be the case due to several other reasons. I will explain below.

    ---------------------------------------------

    Alpha/Beta Durations

We can use duration of the betas as another factor to watch for. I will list out the info on beta durations with the most current information I could find as of this post.

    --------------------------------------

    TBC Beta = 109 Days

    WotLK Beta = 136 Days

    Cataclysm Beta = 192 Days

    Mists Beta = 217 Days

    Warlords Beta = 225 Days

Legion Beta = 282 Days (Demon hunter only alpha was available EXTREMELY early)

BFA Beta = 113 Days (Or about 700 days if you listen to the memes!)

    ---------------------------------------------------

Alpha usually starts about 6 months before launch and closed beta typically gets announced 4 months before launch. Using the fact that no Alpha has been leaked to currently be up and no crazy datamining has been done yet we can assume it has not began yet. So the release is at least 5 to 6 months away. Though due to other information I will list below I believe Alpha will begin very soon. Likely this month.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

    Expansion length

We can look at how long each expansion lasted from launch to launch as another factor to think about. So I will list those below. I will list the time in y/mo format beside the actual day duration to make it easier to think about. The month duration was rounded.

    ---------------------------------------------------

    TBC - 668 days (1y 10mo)

    WotLK - 755 days (2y 1mo)

    Cata - 659 days (1y 10mo)

    MoP - 780 days (1y 2mo)

    WoD - 657 days (1y 10mo)

    Legion - 715 days ( 2y )

BFA - 511 days as of today 1/6/2020

    ----------------------------------------------------

You can tell from the above and blizzard's constant interview answer of aiming for 2 years expansions. That they are very close to that almost all of the time. So that puts several possibilities on the table.

    Long Expansion (780 Days - MoP ) = 10/1/2020

    Short Expansion (657 Days - WoD ) = 5/31/2020

    Average Expansion (717 Days ) = 7/30/2020

Going by the average duration of expansions. You see that a late July/Early august looks very likely. Which also lines up with the duration of betas if Alpha were to start this month. Though using the last patch data I brought up first it does not fit in. Though I said I would explain why I think this expansion will be different for last patches. So I will do that next.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Patch pacing!

All through WoW's history up until legion. Patches had random durations. They would just launch when blizzard finished the content (assumption). So I'm going to list the patch duration averages for all major patches in each expansion below and then use that info to make some more assumptions and use that to factor in with the data we have above.

((The way these averages are done is by averaging the duration of the time between the 3 major patches from each expansion except WoD which only had 2 major patches)) (((So this does not include the duration of the final patch until prepatch into the averages)))

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    TBC Patches - 146 Days

    WotLK Patches - 141 Days

    Cata Patches - 120 Days

    MoP Patches - 118 Days

WoD Patches - 223 Days (Only two patches, ouch.)

    Legion Patches - 122 Days

BFA Patches - 174 Days (We can do this since we know 8.3's release date)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

So to further elaborate you can see that BFA has had the most staggered patches of all. Legion actually had well spaced patches as well except for the first patch. 7.1 came only 2 months after launch. The other two patches were 155 day durations. So what this means is that prior to legion they had not really had content pacing down. They just did it when they could and felt like it was acceptable.

As of legion they are trying to maintain a 5-6month patch cycle. Which is where you can see the change in BFA's patch cycle.

    8.1 - 120 Day Duration

    8.2 - 197 Day Duration

    8.3 - 204 Day Duration

Just from the spacing they have maintained all expansion I believe this will be the first expansion to have a reasonable final patch duration. Expansions have an average of 717 days and we have already been in BFA for 511 days. Which would leave 206 days left in this expansion which seems to be the goal patch duration this time around. This again points to a July/August release for the expansion.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prepatch on PTR is typically 2-3 months before the expansion launches. With the duration of testing being just over 1month and then it launches to live with a little over a month to go until the expansion launches.

So we can expect that to be on PTR 2months after beta starts, 4months after alpha, and 2-3 months before expansion launch. Which is all speculative but would likely be May/June 2020 if we assume this is an early august launch.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    **TL;DR**

I'm going to just throw some dates down as my "guesses" though really its just likely they will be sometime around these dates.

    Alpha Start Date - January 28th, 2020.

Closed Beta Start date - March 31st, 2020.

    Prepatch hits PTR - May 12th, 2020.

    Prepatch hits Live - June 23rd, 2020.

    Launch Date - July 28th, 2020.

Making BFA an average duration expansion of almost 2 years. I am being optimistic a bit with the dates and I could just as likely see all of these dates being moved up 1month. Though I remain hopeful!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope everyone enjoyed the data points and the thoughts along the way. Feel free to correct me if I made mistakes and to discuss my opinion on this expansions duration. I just like doing these posts. Have fun out there. Hope everyone is ready for 8.3 next week!

ALSO MY FORMATTING ON REDDIT IS BAD. I will adjust it in just a bit when I can sit down on the computer and update it.

Battle for Azeroth Season 3 Ends Next Week

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:35 PM PST

Korrak's Revenge has been a lot of fun for me, and I'm surprisingly sad to see it go.

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 08:09 AM PST

I have some problems with social anxiety, being in the spotlight, etc. so raiding, dungeons, and group activities like that are often outside my comfort zone. KR has been the perfect mix of multiple things to be doing, lots of people, and low stakes so nobody really notices me if I mess up or do something embarrassing! It's been a blast catching up my alts and for the first time I actually learned what it feels like to play some of them (Several were token-boosted and used for garrison stuff or mount hunting)

I learned what things make my main classes fun and special, and I learned what other classes I may really enjoy (Or even prefer!)

Honestly I feel like I've become more well-acquainted with the class variety, team mechanics, and gameplay of WoW for the first time, maybe ever. It's been sometimes frustrating, but mostly fun and I hate to see it go. I feel like I could keep doing this for another month .

Coming out of WoW retirement after 7 years: Help Appreciated!

    Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:58 AM PST

So I've decided to dive back into the world of WoW after a 7 year break and I'm looking for tips to get back into it. I last dabbled in MOP but the last time I played properly (probably too much) was when I peaked at clearing WOTLK on heroic (that mount was my pride and joy) but it seems a fair amount has changed/I've forgotten stuff and I feel like a right noob.

I used to main a Warlock but due to real life restraints (I can't sink as many hours into the game as I used to) I'm going to main a Resto Shaman as these were always my fave and to be honest not sure I can face being rubbish on all those DPS meters when I used to love being top. The aim is to hopefully get good enough to help raid in normal or even heroic one day. Some of the people I used to play with still play and we have a very small raiding guild.

My problem(s) is that I blew my free level up token on my Mage who I quickly decided I didn't want to play so my Shaman is level 85! If anyone can offer advice, or places to find good info (just read Wowhead's 8.3 preview) is much appreciated.

    • Levelling! Where best to go to get from 85 to max level as a shaman who wants to main Resto? I'm time poor so should I just buy another level up token?
    • Once I'm max level how do I go about gearing up to be 'raid ready'?
    • Any recommended resources for Resto Shamans?
    • The UI and addons. I forgot how awesomely (but annoyingly) in depth you can make things with add ons etc but it can take hours. Is it possible to literally download and copy someone else's UI?
    • What add-ons are essential these days for healing?
    • What the fuck is an Azerite?
    • Where did WoW Insider go?
    • People's perception of BFA seems quite negative? I did think the 1st mission was not great, did it get better at all?
    • Shadowlands looks awesome - all aboard the hype train! Choo Chooo!
    • Anything else I should know?

There's almost an overwhelming amount of content now out there on WoW (which is great) but it makes shifting through it all quite time consuming if there is a guide to getting back into it somewhere on the web please do point me in the direction!

    Thanks in advance.
