I leveled and geared every tank class through pugged M+ up to ~+10 keys the past few months. Here are my random thoughts on that experience.

    Posted: 02 Apr 2020 04:50 PM PDT

I had never really tanked much until this expansion, but it feels like there has been a shortage, so I thought, "eh, what the hell, let's learn a new role."

I will not claim any sort of high-level expertise as my highest rated tank is now ~1600io, so I'm not pushing the cutting edge here on any class, but thought it might be fun to share some thoughts.

    Assorted ramblings:

    • The number one thing I've noticed is how much you're held responsible for running the show in M+. I'm not a natural leader, so it was weird being responsible for routing, having a really strong knowledge of the dungeons (esp 10+ keys), and learning how to be pretty thick skinned. Learning and utilizing Method Dungeon Tools has been a godsend in higher keys as well as at least presenting like you have a plan at the start of a run.
    • The other thing I noticed is how often you can cover for DPS mistakes. Not a big deal, but DPS can do some really... interesting things (glaring at hunters with that triangular AOE ability). I feel like tanks and healers are held to a different standard in M+ keys, which is fine, but if the tank makes a mistake it's probably not as recoverable and people tend to blame the tank for a lot.
    • It took me a while to learn not to panic as a tank. There are some tank classes that are more relaxing than others (Monk as one example), but with Warrior, it took me a long time to learn that there was just a rotation to active mitigation as compared to freaking out and slamming keybinds every big pull.
    • It's REALLY easy to get groups even a little undergeared. I would see keys that had been in the queue for 30 minutes begging for tanks that would immediately accept me.

In order of my LEAST favorite tank class to my MOST favorite tank class, here is my breakdown:

    Prot Paladin

    • PROS: Fun mobility with pony. The self healing CDs are nice. It feels like they have some good utility in their kit. Feels like a safe choice for a tank in the mid-level keys. Throwing your shield to pick up mobs is awesome as well.
    • CONS: Never really got a flow with this class and I found the play style a little boring for my tastes. It never felt like I could really push with this class, which I do largely attribute to not enjoying the rotation.

    Guardian Druid

    • PROS: It's fun being a bear. I always felt really beefy with the large health pool. Mobility is super fun.
    • CONS: Similar to pally, I never really got in a good flow with this tank and also felt REALLY vulnerable during certain boss abilities. I was also a little bored playing it.

    Vengeance Demon Hunter

    • PROS: Double jump glide is probably the best thing in the entire game (seriously, just go try it if you haven't). This is by far the most fun tank to zip through dungeons with.
    • CONS: I was playing bomb, not glut, which maybe isn't good, I have no idea, but even with that, I felt like my kit was REALLY small. There were gaps in my rotation, which could 100% be attributed to bad play, but it felt like there was a lot of down time.

    Prot Warrior

    • PROS: This is an exciting spec to play. It makes sense that all the best players in the MDI are playing with prot with how much damage they do and how many fun CDs they have to keep AM up. Heroic leap is awesome.
    • CONS: This class required the most focus for me, and I always felt like I was managing A LOT. Of all the tanks, I feel like you have to be on to really push with it.

    Brewmaster Monk

    • PROS: This is the chillest tank class imo, and probably the one I'd recommend anyone start with if they were interested in learning how to tank. The kit is fun, and somewhat straightforward. Stagger is an incredible ability for new tanks. RoP is OP.
    • CONS: I feel like my DPS on monk was always really low and thus wasn't contributing as much to pushing. Willing to admit I was just missing something in the rotation.

    Blood DK

    • PROS: I feel like this class has so much sustainability in mid-level keys. Being able to pool RP and get a nice buffed death strike for an 80% HP heal is always so fun. Looking at Healing Done in Details after a run and basically competing with the actual healer is fun. Death Grip is SO fun.
    • CONS: Boy oh boy do you need to have a good healer who knows how to heal DKs to push with. I can't tell you how many times I'd get a big healer CD right as I'm healing myself back to full. This class also feels stuck a bit with a key ceiling, i.e., not many people are pushing +20 with DKs right now.

Anywho, these are my thoughts - not saying I'm right about anything above, but just some random observations.

For those looking to try tanking out for themselves, here are a few recommendations:

    • Each class can be fun / good in the right hands I'm sure. I think it's worth trying a couple to see what you like.
    • When you're starting out in low keys, I highly recommend you only list your own key in queue and specifically say in the description CHILL - LEARNING HOW TO TANK to make sure you hopefully only get people who will be supportive. I did that on several runs while starting out and people were very helpful. Several runs, a tank would join as DPS and offer tips, it was super helpful.
    • Once you're in the 10+ range, Method Dungeon Tools is a must imo.

Back in 2008 when this was posted I was super excited because I had always wanted a music based class, but then I realized it was April 1st and my dreams were crushed. Still to this day, I wait for a class that can attack and heal with the power of music.

Reusing Legacy Raids as Leveling Content

    Posted: 03 Apr 2020 01:49 AM PDT

I already posted this in the WoW forums, but I figured I'd post it here too.

Legacy content is often overlooked, considering current expansion content will always give you the most progress. On the flip side, however, legacy content is also known to be a fun bit of content that still give decent rewards, such as cosmetics, and a pocket full of change.
I believe that with the introduction of scaling, and party sync, legacy content could be revived as far as it being relevant content. I would love to revisit raids such as Black Temple, (example) as a level 80 DK, gathering a friend or two to clear it for gear, cosmetics, and experience.
In the perfect world- in my opinion, each boss would give a solid amount of experience, but would have a certain emphasis on the difficulty, with the gear scaling to your level (would obviously fall off in the latest expansion).
I feel like this would revitalize a lot of the old world, and allow for new player to experience a lot of the lore within those raids, along with having a really enticing leveling experience.
