    An Open Letter to all WoW Addon Developers: Move to GitHub

    We should be able to make a good distribution platform and/or public API from this, and get away from Overwolf. It would also be a great chance for all developers to come together and make something great and open source from scratch.

    Edit: One of my fears is that with Curseforge and Overwolf working together so closely now, and with Overwolf sending out cease and desist letters, it's just a matter of time before they monopolize the addon distribution market. We need to move to a free open source solution.

    Or I guess we should all just move to WowInterface and off of Curseforge.

    Edit 2 I was not aware makers of popular addons were being paid on Curseforge based on number of downloads. Obviously, the bigger addons who want that money will choose to stay behind. But my hope is that if we get enough of the smaller devs to move off, the addon availablilty on Curseforge will be so low, that even popular addon makers will choose to leave as well.

    Portaling in, Zen Pilgrimage-ing in, Zeppelin-ing in... all immediately result in a streaming error. Attempting to log into a character in Pandaria gives the same error.

    I'd suggest that before the pre-patch drops, to move any characters out of Pandaria areas.

    Exception: The Pandaren starter zone appears to be separate and not affected.

    EDIT: It looks like I misunderstood the original post from WowUp concerning a Cease and Desist. They are in talks for the future of both apps.

    That said, Overwolf is still cracking down on the scraping of Curseforge w/ their defense being:

    CurseForge does not have an official API for 3rd parties who want to download files from its servers. The way some addon managers do it today, is by reverse engineering the calls between the Twitch Client and the CurseForge backend. A good analogy is someone continuously scraping Spotify's full song catalogue, and streaming songs from Spotify's servers on a standalone app without receiving the artists consent to do so.

    Link and short summary:

    We all knew from the beginning that one day the powers that be would be coming one day. That day was yesterday. Yesterday I was approached by a member of the Overwolf team who essentially told me I could either join them by embedding WowUp into their framework or stop using the CurseForge API.

    For those not in the know a few months ago Overwolf bought Cursforge from Twitch and as such gained control of all their addons.

    Now Overwolf says: (WoWHead article)

    We know that CurseForge has been scraped forever and the team at Twitch has been fighting it and sending C&D letters back and forth. So, why is this a problem?

    Putting aside the legal jibber jabber, when you scrape you:

    • Distribute the authors' intellectual property without their consent
    • Prevent us from tracking engagement, and therefore you impact authors' earnings
    • There's a full team working on building and maintaining the CurseForge backend, support, file moderation etc., and you're using this (and our bandwidth) without consent and against terms of service.

    Personally, I don't know many mod authors that make addons to turn a profit and I don't like that Overwolf paints this as if they're a champion for the mod authors when a far simpler explanation is that forcing traffic to their app increases their advertising profits.

    If you were planning on, or are already, using a different manager you might want to check in and see what's up b/c it's likely they won't be able to access ~90% of published addons.

    Doesn't necessarily mean there's no longer a path they can take. Many authors have Git repos that those managers could utilize and if you have an addon you truly love using I'd encourage you to reach out and ensure they do have one.

     

    If you don't already know how I made a post detailing how to manually install addons and for those who truly do not care, Overwolf will be releasing their first public build on the 20th.

    11 years ago, on October 21st 2009, my guild 'Casual' killed Yogg-0 for the first time EVER on the US-Hyjal server.

    Kill Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW4rWOG3RSs (apologies in advance for the music video style - A guildie made it) - I still get embarrassed watching that video because I ended up being the first one to die right at the end to an add that ran through Yogg-Saron while I had Blade Flurry up and 'Tricks' on CD.

    I was fairly new to the guild and still earning my keep. I had only maybe joined a few weeks prior, but was lucky enough to snag a starting raid spot for progression.

    By this time in the WoTLK expansion, Trial of the Crusader was already out for a couple of weeks, and was our primary progression raid focus. Luckily, toward the end of each raid week, we were able to go back into Ulduar to try and secure the Yogg-0 kill. For those who remember, it was a hard boss for sure.

    Since I was new to the guild, I was far far down on the totem pole of when I was expected to get the mount....that's just how it goes sometimes and I didn't think anything of it. However, as the weeks went on, and with ICC coming out in December of 2009, our time in Ulduar became less and less. There were even some weeks where we didn't even step foot in there since 'Invincible' became the new "MUST HAVE" mount in WoTLK.

    As week after week passed, fast forward to the end of the expansion, I STILL had not secured the mount. At the time...I had 1 main character (My rogue - Zemme) that I have played since day 1 when I started back in BC. I didn't have any serious alts I could have used to re-run Ulduar each week. My fault, absolutely...but that's just how I played back then. Anyway, on the FINAL week before the 100% chance became a 1% chance, It was between myself, and a Paladin tank who joined 'Casual' at the same time as I did. I lost the roll....I rolled a 93....he rolled a 98. I was devastated....I had a realm first "Death's Demise" title...Something I was SO proud of...but no Mim's Head to show for it.

    For MONTHS, I spent every moment outside of progression signing up for raid after raid on OpenRaid, trying to re-kill Yogg-0 and have it drop. Over time, luckily it became something I could farm on my own, but week after week it was still the same result.....Nothing. Months became years, years became a decade....Still Nothing.

    That is....until yesterday. I had gotten to the point of mindless disappointment each week when looting Yogg. It just became habit to enter Ulduar, and leave without a mount. I also knew there was an achievement as well, so I figured if/when I looted the head, the achi would be a dead giveaway that it dropped (turns out the achi only pops when you 'use' the mount and add it to your mount collection). Not realizing that, I looted yesterday and saw no achi, so I chalked it up to another week of disappointment and ran toward the teleporter....then I noticed the word "Mimiron's" in the spam of purple....I looked closer and my heart sank to the floor. I couldn't believe it.....I opened my bags and saw the yellow and blue icon, and was absolutely ecstatic. IT. F******. DROPPED.

    Finally.....A painful, embarrassing, 11 year journey was over. WoTLK was a very special time in my life, and this was a piece of nostalgia that I just HAD to have. To me, no other mount matters and I seriously think it will be the only mount I ever ride for the remainder of my wow career.

    While I know it's not everyone's favorite mount.......
