The War of Thorns has NOT Been Retconned

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 08:59 PM PDT

UPDATE: As BussyBlastBismallah (thanks for taking time to explain) pointed out in the comments, "retcon" can have several meanings. I should specify that when I say the War of Thorns has not been retconned by these quests, I mean that it is not saying the events are no longer canon and that Teldrassil didn't burn down anymore. Unless Blizzard says otherwise, the War of Thorns still happened in WoW lore.

(Deleted and reposted this because I was in a hurry to quell the confusion and left some embarrassing typos in the title in my rush, sorry about that).

So I've been informed on twitter that on this reddit a series of tweets I had made caused people to believe that Teldrassil was retconned. I don't understand that, but I will explain in more detail what's going on in the new starting experience.

When you complete Exile's Reach, you are then sent to Stormwind and, after a quest that gives you a mount and a quest that teaches you how inns and hearthstones work, are immediately sent to a new version of the Kul Tiras intro. The dialogue is completely rewritten but carries the same basic idea except that Anduin is the one to come up with recruiting Kul Tiras instead of Jaina, and that Genn is very slightly more rude to her. They also removed the cinematic of the fleet getting destroyed by the Zandalari navy, and no longer mention Zul and Talanji escaping from the stockade. Instead it opens with Shaw telling Anduin the Zandalari have already "joined forces" with the Horde.

In this new version you don't do the Battle for Lordaeron and never receive the Heart of Azeroth necklace. Because of these removals, new characters are never informed that the Battle for Lordaeron or the burning of Teldrassil happened (though new night elf players are made aware that Teldrassil exists in their starting cinematic, in what myself and many others have considered an odd decision given the timeline).

The only explanation offered for why the Alliance and Horde are at war, and these are direct quotes from the questline, are "It seems there was some trouble with the Horde while we were away" and "I have received word that the Horde has joined forces with the Zandalari Empire ... Then we must make new allies of our own."

I'm not sure why this is causing such confusion. They removed references to the events, not implied they never happened. The new intro also removes all reference to the Heart of Azeroth and the Wound in Silithus. You never meet Magni at all. Yet no one is using that to argue those events are being made non-canon.

I'm sorry about any confusion that has arisen from this and hope I've provided more clarity.

I really don't like the return of "Daily" quests on top of World Quests and I REALLY hope this doesn't continue into Shadowlands...

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 07:01 AM PDT

Nazjatar and Mechagon reputation farm is by far my least favorite thing to do in BFA. I actually got (some) enjoyment out of the Zandalar and Kul Tiras zones (twice on Alliance and Horde). There's just something simple and relaxing about flying to a World Quest, finishing it and going to the next until the map is clear. It's so basic, but it works. Why are we back to an overwhelming amount of Dailies at a hub ON TOP OF WQs on the map. I literally stopped doing Mechagon dailies about a week in because I couldn't stand them and just did the 1 single WQ each day instead. I just did a Paragon of Nazjatar, but I have zero desire to go again. I'm getting much more enjoyment out of the Legion WQs and the OG BFA zone WQs.

I feel like this is partially due to Blizzard seeing that people want "Old WoW" again. But, Legion is honestly my favorite expansion and time in WoW. We shouldn't be taking steps backwards here.

Edit: Oh, and I actually forgot entirely about Uldum and Vale of Eternal Blossoms because I stopped doing them about a week in as-well. I just can't stand this new Daily Quest hub thing instead of World Quests.

I'm an altoholic that's enjoying 8.3 quite a bit actually. I have most of the essences at rank 3 and can earn them on any character with a bit of grinding. My main concern is that right now I'm doing the foothold quest lines for the 10th time and it's really frustrating. The mission command table is really annoying to access and I know it's intended that way. You have to do 3 foothold quests to get green followers and the nazjatar intro plus do the missing crew quest for a fourth. You have to log in and do weeks of missions on these followers to get them to legendary.

In legion alts weren't really possible because you had to keep up with Artifact Knowledge, incredibly long and time gated order hall campaign, and farm your legendaries! But this all got alleviated throughout the expansion By the time we were at 7.2.5 the order hall was just optional and a lot faster, Artifact knowledge was automatic, and legendaries dropped like candy if you farmed the raids. They had follower exp books you could buy with crystals on the broken shore. Obtaining the max amount of followers was easy, and they kept adding sources of follower equipment.

Look at bfa though. You have to get the silver dagger on literally every character to unlock najzatar puzzle world quests. You have to do the najzatar intro to even unlock the cloak questline. (To be fair I think you had to do the broken shore intro as well to unlock argus, but that quest was skippable with the press of a button!) The argus intro was skippable as well if you had completed it. Getting the cloak takes at least an hour and that's including skipping both the pandaria and uldum scenarios.

I get they felt the need to limit access to the mission table because of players that do have 10 characters. Those players log in every day and click the mission quests to rake a few extra grand daily. I would rather the mission table be gone if it's going to be such a pain in the ass to be accessible.

Shadowlands Alpha and Fire Mage Currently *My own thoughts*

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 09:04 PM PDT

As I am sure many people know by now that Fire is going through some pretty "interesting" changes to how the class will be played fundamentally. Here is a list of the major changes to fire mage as currently on the alpha.

Fire Mage Shadowlands Class Change Highlights:

Mastery: Ignite Reworked. Fireblast now serves as the catalyst: when used against an enemy who is Ignited, it spreads to up to eight enemies close to your target.
Blast Wave now does more damage, and an increased slow duration.
    Kindling Combustion cooldown reduction increased.
Pyroclasm damage bonus to Pyroblast increased.
Shimmer charges decreased from 2 to 1.
Focus mage *New Talent* replacing Mirror Image
Mirror Image becomes baseline talent for all mage.
Pyroblast does additional (18.6% of Spell power) Fire damage over 6s

Now some of these changes seem great, ie: Pyroclasm additional bonus damage over time (I don't know if this new dot stacks with itself or not), Mirror Image being baseline, and increased Pyroclasm damage so meteor might not always be the default anymore. It is disappointing that mage straight up loses a second charge of shimmer, drastically cutting down mobility. This will mostly be felt in PvP settings. Now onto the biggest issue about the whole Fire mage changes, the new Ignite. This change will drastically hurt aoe and single target damage. This restricts Fire mages combustion burst encase they need to spread their Ignite damage right after the combustion window ends, making you keep once charge of fire blast in reserve and forcing people to use scorch in its place. The idea blizzard had in mind for this change was for more control over how we choose to spread Ignite damage, but in turn this has drastically restricted their gameplay and cause player to be more cautious on how they spend their fire blast charges, which are the very core of a combustion rotation. Changing Fire mages playstyle from reactive to a more timid-proactive style.

Now if they want to stay with how Ignite works in alpha that is fine, but fireblast cannot be the catalyst for the specs aoe and cleave potential. I have seen other members of the mage community throw their suggestions on how Blizzard could come to adjust this for the better, but i have not seen something like this suggested yet.

My idea on how Blizzard could address the ignite issue; remove Phoenix Flames from the Tier 35 talent row and make it baseline. Phoenix Flames will now act as the trigger to spread the ignite dot to different targets. Fireblast stays the same as its always been. To replace the empty talent on tier 35 I have come up with two different ideas for potential talents. First talent Duplicative Incineration, Passive talent that gives your fireball a % chance to cast a secondary fireball right after. Second talent idea, Phoenix Reborn, Passive talent that lets your Phoenix flames jump onto two nearby targets that are effected by ignite with each jump the dealing would be reduced by 50%.

Now these are just my idea and thoughts on the Ignite situation, please if anyone else has other ideas feel free to share your thoughts and comments.
