The lessons of 8.3 (so far) and how shadowlands' systems may actually be awesome

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 08:22 PM PST

Before Ny'alotha opens, I wanted to say how much I think the systems that 8.3 is putting in place allow us to be optimistic for SL's own systems.

The patch can be a bit disappointing for sure, especially in the amount of content that there is to do . After a few weeks, I think we will all be tired of doing the same invasions over and over and once we're geared, there will basically not a be a real reason to log in except to do old content, level alts, etc. The rares quest is also omega boring (but to be fair it can be skipped altogether since it does not give a lot of essences and does not compare with the hassle that was mechagon's). One other thing that bothers me is not being able to do horrific visions over and over just for the kicks, just to train and try to push what I can do with my current cape level. Even if it means not getting any mementos.

However, I must say I was really impressed by the actual content that we got. The introductory questline was much longer than I expected, and the story it told was surprisingly good. The whole idea of fighting the corruption in titan facilities, wrathion coming back and giving us a real strategy to use the forge to kill n'zoth instead of simply entering the raid and killing him like it's no big deal was really well told IN GAME. It didn't need short stories, comics or anything outside of the game to make sense like the war of the thorns did. If the story of SL is gonna be told in the same way, we are in for a treat.

But where Blizzard hit the nail is the overall currency system. Let's break down what is 'mandatory' :- Doing the black empire assault once per week

    - Doing the two assault on the other zone (2 per week)

    - Doing the lesser vision every day

    - Doing one horrific vision per week (or 2/3 if you're behind)

That's it. No absurd AP grind (just the remains of the old system), no essence grind behind reps (they are only for some recipes and cosmetics), no perl grind, no legendary grind.

This definitely looks A LOT like what we were promised in SL. We can even draw direct comparisons with what features were annouced : WQ will become WQ 2.0, assaults will probably be what the Maw looks like, and thorgast will be like the horrific visions. We can even surely assume that each of these feature will be much better since we were for instance said that Thorgast will yield cosmetic rewards when farmed.

So yeah, I wanted to spread some positivity around this patch that for me got a lot of things right and is carrying the weight of the entire expansion plus the fact that we had to wait so long to get it. I know some people do not see it the way I do and are still very worried for SL and the future of WoW but I prefer to be optimistic. Let's not forget the shit that Legion was taking before everyone agreed how it was one of the best expansions released. I believe that we will recall fondly of visions, the story of the patch and maybe the raid when we will draw conclusions from BFA.

TL;DR : Even though the patch can be disappointing in terms of content, the currency system of 8.3 is very well though of and if it is slightly improved upon could be one of the strength of SL.

Quest to kill N'zoth given so suddenly, it made me chuckle.

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 05:07 AM PST

    It's given so "out-of-nowhere" it's almost hilarious.

    • Go kill 10 voidy-tentacly things.

    • Good! Now co collect 15 dark blobs at this location.

    • Good! Now go kill N'zoth!

Wait what?! That's some leap in difficulty!

This flashes a warning on your screen when you are at 20000 Coalescing Visions and are in danger of overcapping yourself.

I was going to make one but a quick search showed there is already one on wago. I am not author, all credits to them.
