Can we please have a 'one free character service' voucher instead of a character boost on future expansions?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:58 PM PDT

I love my 120 paladin. It seems a waste to boost a brand new 120 rather than being able to freely move my paladin to a new server. If we got a free character service voucher, we could easily just use it on whatever we want instead of having to use the character boost. I'd use mine on a free transfer. I know a lot of people would use it on a race change, or a character customization....

when you are releasing a new race, not everyone wants the heritage armor. I mean sure you could easily use a character boost on that. But then you lose all the heritage of your character and the importance of that character being your main for x amount of years

I feel like many people, mostly blizzard, don't quite realize what shadow priests mean when they say they feel 'locked in' to certain talents or that their talent choices are not fun additions, but core spec abilities.

Here are a couple thoughts from a shadow priest that hasn't changed 4 of his talent choices in the last year(almost two years actually):

Note: none of this comes from a place of anger, if you're going to be mad please do it elsewhere. My goal is to provide constructive feedback.

Talents that are actually core abilities:

In my opinion there are 3 talents that are actually not talents at all, but are so fundamental to the way the spec plays that playing without them would be playing a different spec.

    Shadow Word: Void:

The addition of a second charge of "mind blast" is incredibly important to the core rotation of the shadow priest. Having a second charge allows for the player to make decisions about where and how to wait or cast your mind blasts. Without Shadow Word: Void talented, if mind blast is castable, you cast mind blast. Done. With two charges to play around with, you have the option to delay a "mind blast" for up to 9 seconds and instead prioritize a void bolt, cast a utility ability, or do anything else you wish without being harshly punished by losing valuable cooldown time on your mind blast. This fundamentally changes the shadow priest rotation, allows for more flexibility, and almost completely removes the awful feeling of being forced to move while mind blast is off cooldown. Even if this wasn't numerically the only talent choice, it would still be the only talent choice on this row that removes an awful-feeling part of the baseline shadowpriest rotation.

    Lingering Insanity:

Outside of voidform, the baseline rotation for shadow priest is dots, mind blast, mind flay. Not an interesting or fun way to play. Inside voidform the rotation becomes interesting, fun, and far more rewarding from a dps standpoint as well. Lingering insanity shortens the amount of time you are forced to spend in the not-fun part of your spec and thus lengthens the amount of time you are allowed to spend in the fun part of your spec. When you play really well and build up to a massive number of stacks, that feels rewarding, and when you immediately snap back to nothingness as soon as your voidform ends the difference is jarring. I believe blizzard is aware of this and tried to fix it with chorus of insanity, which makes it even more surprising that they would choose not to baseline lingering insanity. Either they don't know how bad it feels to lose all of your voidform benefits instantly, OR they want some players to sometimes make the choice to spend more time in the not-fun part of the shadow priest rotation. This seems like an obvious choice for baselining because playing without it is simply less fun regardless of damage numbers.

    Legacy of the Void:

Legacy of the void solves the exact same problems as Lingering insanity, but has an even worse downside if you don't "choose" this talent. This talent allows the player to spend less of their time in the not-fun part of the shadow priest rotation, and more time in the fun part of the shadow priest rotation. In the same way as Lingering Insanity, this makes the transition at the end of a voidform much less of a problem because you only have to spend maybe 5-6 globals outside of a voidform. Additionally, the base case time on Void Eruption feels abysmal. It feels like casting a chaos bolt without a conflagration buff. The damage from Void Eruption doesn't justify the enormous base cast time against single targets, and the only reason you cast it is to get into the fun part of your rotation. Again regardless of damage numbers, the spec is simply less fun without this "choice".

    Honorable mention:Auspicious Spirits:

While I don't consider Auspicious Spirits to be a core function of the spec like the other three, this talent is very noticeable and I love it. I would be very sad if I was ever numerically forced not to take it, luckily for me it has been the best choice for most of the past 4 years so I haven't had to lose it.

I went back to check the warcraftlogs of every raidboss in BFA and in 100% of bosses after uldir, 100% of (the top 100 mythic) shadow priests were using Shadow word: Void, Legacy of the void, and Lingering insanity. 0% variation in the last almost 2 years.

Thanks all for reading my thoughts. Let me know what you think about this. And whether or not you agree.PS. If you're interested I've been an aotc every tier shadow priest main for all of Legion and BFA and only barely dabbled in mythic bosses each tier. I would like to think I'm fairly well versed in how the spec feels to play.

For the love of God, can we please pin a “New/Returning Players Guide” post?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 09:40 PM PDT

I'd say conservatively, about 50% of posts relate to one or more of the following:

"I'm so confused by Visions" "How do I start Nazjatar?" "What are essences and how do I get them?" "Gimme the skippy on corruptions" "How do I level up my cloak/heart?" "Haven't played since [insert xpac name] wtf do I do"

    Etc etc etc.

Can we please just get a sticky which links to the various wowhead and Icy Veins guides? They're so good and cover all the ground people need to read.

It would be better for new players, better for returning players, and better for the sub!

ETA: I am 100% not advocating against people asking for help. This game can be daunting as hell, especially with all the new systems at play. I really enjoy helping people, as do many others on this sub. What I'm advocating for is a more overt list of resources, because let's face it, most people don't check FAQs before posting.

    N'Zoth's take on Shadowlands?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 11:02 PM PDT

So I was listening to N'zoth's whispers again from both 8.1.5 and 8.3.Curiously, as early as in 8.1.5 he already says a direct nod to Shadowlands with:
"The Veil, wanes...his crown will open the way."
(In reference to the shattering of the Veil between the mortal realm and the Shadowlands.)

That made me wonder if any of his other lines could be directly tied to SL, for example:
"Six seats at the high table, six mouths that hunger, one will consume all others."
Could this refer to the rulers of the Shadowlands?(Necrolords, Venthyr, Kyrian, Night Fae, Denizens of Oribos (Or perhaps a zone yet to be released?) and the Jailor from the Maw.

    In addition:
"The Light, has struck a bargain with the enemy of all."
With the current speculation about the Arbiter and her true intentions/role in the Shadowlands, do you think this (Or any other whisper) could be a warning for us that she is not what she seems to be?

Do you have theories on any of his other quotes?

    N'Zoth ga zyqtahg iilth.

Survey: Player Preferences in World of Warcraft Game Design

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 09:21 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

My name is Dennis and I'm a bachelor's degree student from the Technische Hochschule Köln (Cologne University of Applied Sciences) in Cologne, Germany. I'm currently writing my thesis on the topic "Exploring Player Preferences in MMORPG Design based on World of Warcraft". As part of my thesis, I'm conducting a scientific survey that I want to share with you. I'd be very happy if you took the time to complete it!

Below you will find a link to the survey. Before that, allow me to explain what this survey is about.

I'm passionate about games and game design and World of Warcraft has been a big part of my life. I've always enjoyed discussing and thinking about the design of the game and MMORPGs in general. I think it's fascinating to see the difference a seemingly minor change can make in how players feel about a game or how design philosophies change with time and affect the playerbase of a game. As we all know, World of Warcraft has gone through a lot of changes over the years and many players have come and gone.

With this survey I want to find out which versions of WoW you liked for different aspects of the game and furthermore, what type of player you are. This will hopefully reveal insights into game design for MMORPGs.

So, about the survey. The survey you will find behind the link below is roughly split into two parts. The first part will ask you questions about what versions of the game you prefer for different parts of the game. The second part is based on Nick Yee's "Empirical Model of Player Motivations" and gathers data that allows me to create your "Gamer Motivation Profile".

Here's the link to the survey:https://www.unipark.de/uc/player-preferences-wow-survey-field/

The survey should take about 15 minutes to complete. I hope you're going to take it! Please feel free to share this post with your guilds and friends, even if they might not be playing WoW anymore.

If you have any questions, leave them below and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

EDIT: I have to say I am overwhelmed by the response I've received so far. Thank you all so much for your comments, your upvotes and your participation! I'd be happy to see even more people participate.
